Uitvertraagd

This project resulted in an installation design prototype that was supposed to help motivating people with early stage dimentia to participate in activities. The installation lets people interact with known objects, this interaction is captured and projected in super slow-mo, turning an average interaction into a magical and interesting result.

Uitvertraagd is an installation, designed for a community day care facility, guiding imagination and triggering intrinsic motivation of people in an early stage of dementia to participate in activities. Uitvertraagd also functions as a catalyst for conversation between people with dementia, their family and caregivers. Caregivers can gain insight into the person with dementia’s interests by observing their interactions with the installation.

Our installation consists out of a table displaying representations of possible activities that can be engaged in at a care home (like painting or cooking). These representations help the person with dementia imagine possible activities, which is important since they face difficulties when deciding upon an activity to participate in.

The miniature activities can be used on the other side of the table, where a small high speed studio is build. Here they can easily take slow-motion videos of the activities, which will be shown through projection. Enlarging a short action that does not require any skills or knowledge can create a beautiful output that people can feel proud of, which will stimulate and motivate them to be more active.

Reflection

I am proud that the project, originally part of an university class elective, was chosen to be part of the 'Mind the Step' exhibition (showing selected works from all Technical University's Design Faculties in the Netherlands) at the Dutch Design Week. Especially when we were later nominated for a Social Design Talent award from the municipality of Eindhoven.

I think we had a good approach towards this social problem. We held interviews with inhabitants and personel at the elderly daycare to find out what problems they had. We also had the opportunity to test the design there, which proved that we still had some work to do to make it actually usable, but the interest was there.
